There is a Jewish tradition that, since the 8th century, calls Sefarad, a biblical name, the Iberian Peninsula, and Sephardim the Jews who live there.
The tradition
The term Sephardim will be applied primarily to the descendants of the Iberian Jews exiled in 1492 to the countries of refuge, where they preserved, to this day, a mother tongue of Castilian with medieval resonances, in addition to other elements of medieval Hispano-Jewish culture, such as rituals and attire.
The Sephardic wedding dress that we reproduce comes from the Maghreb, where significant communities of Jews exiled by the Catholic Monarchs sought refuge, and continued to celebrate weddings as they did when living among us, although later Arab influences are noticeable.
This dress has been used in the representation of the Jewish wedding organized by the Center for Medieval Studies, since 1993, in the “Festa da Istoria” of Ribadavia.
